Some of the best websites to buy are those that have lots of upwards potential that hasn’t been factored in to their sale price.
You have put a little more leg work in to find these types of sites, but I assure you that the added effort is well worth it. They can be extremely profitable whether your goal is to flip them for immediate profits, or to hold and “milk” the profits for residual cash flow.
These types of websites generally fall into one or more of the following catagories:
Neglected
Many websites that have not been touched for some time simply need a little “resuscitation” in order to quickly increase their traffic and earnings. For an esta
blished website, this usually means simply adding some fresh content and building some backlinks. There are plenty of websites like this available on Flippa and other auction sites.
Poorly Optimized
I see websites (particularly adsense sites) that are poorly optimized quite often. In many cases all you have to do to improve these is change the site layout or graphics. Even something as simple as changing the link color or moving from left to right navigation can make dramatic changes in earnings.
Wrong Monetization
These websites may be earning some money, but will perform much better with an alternate form of monetization. For example, a website may be earning 100% of it’s profits from Google Adsense, but would be better suited for an info product like an online course or ebook.
Not Monetized
Although most of the websites that are not monetized are newer autoblog type junk sites, you may be fortunate enough to find one that is well established and is producing excellent traffic numbers. These little chestnuts can turn in to real gold mines if you know what to do with them.
Of course it does take some time before your intuition sets in and you are able to pick out the “gems”, but occasionally you may get lucky like I did below…
How I Made A $200 Website Worth $2500 In 15 Minutes
In this particular example, I made one small change to a website that I had owned for a number of months and substantially increased it’s earnings.
It had been earning about $20 a month on average via Google Adsense, and increased to $300 within the first month of making a small simple change.
I’ll get to what I did a little later, but first more about this site…
This was an adsense website in the weight loss niche that I had purchased for $200 about 6 months ago. I bought it from a private seller that I trusted-this guy had come through for me on all of his websites before so I essentially just bought it sight unseen and I forked over that cash. Note: I would never recommend that you buy a website without thorough due diligence unless you are dealing with a buyer that you know is fully trustworthy.
Anyway, back to the site…
My plan was simply to let this site do her thing, and add some more residual income to my portfolio of Adsense websites.
Well, about 6 months later I finally got around to checking this site out. I gave it “the whole nine yards” and analyzed the traffic, check out it’s earning in more detail, looked at it’s competitors etc.
I won’t get in to the exact details, but I came to the conclusion that this site would be much better suited to promote a weight loss ebook as opposed to an Adsense site… and I turned out to be quite right. One month after I removed Adsense and placed an affiliate link on the site, it earned more money than it had for the entire 8 months prior!
Putting It All Together
Finding websites that are not living up to their full potential can be very profitable. It can be well worth the extra time it takes to search for these opportunities that fly under the radar of other buyers that are looking at earnings as the primary buy factor. As you become more experienced you will be able to find plenty of these websites, or perhaps before that intuition kicks in you might just get lucky like I did…
So get out there and buy some sites!

Hi,
Great stuff! I know someone that bought a website making $100/day and TRIPLED it in just 3 months – and didn’t do a THING! Silly seller…
